Hands On: Linksys EA6400

A powerful local network begins with the router. Owning a better quality router will ensure that no matter how many process are running, everything will remain consistent. This is the case with the Linksys EA6400. It has an attractive, slim design that fits well into any home theatre set up.

Let me start by saying I have 6 wired devices on my network. Even though AC wireless is fast, most products aren’t upgraded yet to benefit from it. I still prefer to use a wired Ethernet connection solely for reliability and efficiency. The next step down in wireless speed is simply not powerful enough for some of the tasks I require. For devices that only have wireless N capabilities, they’re still able to connect and benefit from the range AC provides – just not the speed boost. The EA6400 produces the best wireless signal I’ve had from a router, easily reaching my backyard and driveway. The wireless function features ‘Beamforming’ technology, which will focus the signal to devices for a stronger, more reliable connection. There is also a USB 3.0 port on the back for sharing external storage or a printer across all computers connected on the network.

The EA6400 features smart access via an iOS app, or through the web dashboard. This allows you to control various aspects of the router including device management, power functions, security, connection status, and more. I am able to monitor my network away from home through the app and make sure everything is running smoothly. These features are important to me as I prefer to constantly know the status of my gear at all times. No other product has offered this level of integration in a networking router.

There are 4 wired ports on the EA6400, so I needed to pair it with the D-Link DGS-1005G Ethernet switch to support the rest of my wired connections. It links up to one port on the EA6400 and provides an additional 4. Since bridging the two requires the use of one port on the router and one on the switch, there is a total of 7 provided which leaves me with one to spare. The devices I have connected are –

  • Xbox One
  • Yamaha AV receiver
  • Western Digital EX4
  • Apple TV 4
  • Philips Hue
  • Desktop PC

Overall, I’m very satisfied with the reliability that the EA6400 has provided and will continue to purchase Linksys networking products in the future.
